Like father, like… well… daughter. Jackie Purtan comes to the Dick Purtan Radio Show in Detroit having worn a variety of creative hats. After spending a few years in the advertising business, she traded in her commercial writing skills for the Second City Stage. Jackie was an original cast member of the legendary comedy troupe when it debuted in the Motor City in 1993. With Second City Jackie’s comedic abilities blossomed, as she became part of a team that wrote and performed original material on a nightly basis. And what Jackie didn’t write, she improvised, because after all, improvisational humor is the foundation of Second City.
Jackie not only gained great insight into the world of comedy, she gained a husband, Mark, Chicago’s Second City Music Director. Hearing a call to “head east, young couple”, Mark and Jackie settled in New York City, where Jackie worked in morning radio, wrote material for nationally known stand up comedians, and squeezed in some commercial voice over work in her spare time. Meanwhile, from New York, Jackie was providing scripts for her Dad’s morning radio show in Detroit.
Jackie’s contribution became a full time endeavor after the untimely death of Dick Purtan’s longtime producer, Gene Taylor, in January of 2001. With her role on the show escalating, Jackie and Mark packed their bags and headed home, where Jackie is now a full time cast member of Purtan’s People. Within two months of her arrival back in Detroit, Jackie was not only delivering great lines, she found time to deliver a great baby, Baby Charlie, her best audience. When she’s not changing diapers between 2 and 4 in the morning, Jackie can be heard weekdays on the Dick Purtan Show between 5 and 10 and Saturdays from 6 to 10.
